Live on Zoom with Calypso Diving Centre: Sharks - How the predator turned to prey

Each of you who has seen a shark on a dive knows how fascinating and beautiful these fishes are. And did you know that we have sharks here in the Maltese Islands as well? On the photo above you can see the release of a small spotted catshark here in Malta by the local shark-conservationists SharkLab-Malta.

No matter if a catshark, whitetip or whaleshark – it is always a special moment for a diver to meet one of them!

But not only are they beautiful, they also are crucial for the marine ecosystem. Sharks are at the top of the food chain and contribute significantly to the health of the reefs. Without them, we will lose our coral reefs & fish population, and our ocean’s water quality will deteriorate.

Enough reason to protect them, right?

Sadly reality looks very different.

Every year several 100.000 sharks are dying an agonizing death in ghost nets, fishing trophy, and are hunted mercilessly for their fins.

Knowledge is the first step to help protecting this fragile species! We have teamed up with the Marine Biologist Sarah Russwurm to make it more public why sharks are endangered, and what YOU and I can do to help them.
